Now mounted as a hanging scroll, this image was originally part of a set of handscrolls depicting the history of the Jin’o-ji, a Buddhist temple near Osaka. In this scene a famous cleric Kukai (774–835) is shown during a visit to the temple to dedicate a sutra he copied there. He is seated on a cliff near the temple.
