Chaim Soutine

Russian (active France), 1893 - 1943

In 1923 Chaim Soutine moved from Céret in the Pyrenees Mountains to Cagnes-sur-Mer on the coast, where he would live and work for the next two years, embarking on a second series of paintings inspired by the towns and countryside he encountered in the south of France. In this work, the houses, roads, and trees are set on a steep, dizzying incline, similar to the artist's views of Céret, but the palette is much brighter and the composition more open. The general effect is one of lightness and airiness, as opposed to the claustrophobia of the tumultuous Céret paintings.
