On the Third day of the Third Month of 353, a group of forty-two Chinese poets and scholars met at the Orchid Pavilion to compose poems while seated on the banks of a winding stream. This event became famous through the preface written by the host, Wang Hsi-chih, and became a favorite theme for Japanese literati artists even into the late nineteenth century.
