Evening Dress

James Galanos

American, 1924 - 2016

This one-of-a-kind evening dress with an attached hood, made from a nineteenth-century lace mantilla that the designer purchased in New York, was beaded following the pattern of the original lace design. One of Galanos's all-time favorites, this gown was first seen at the 1962 Coty Awards fashion show of work by the four members of the Coty Hall of Fame including Galanos. It was later modeled at the 1963 Crystal Ball held by the Philadelphia Fashion Group at the Philadelphia Museum of Art. This glittering event honored five Philadelphians: Princess Grace of Monaco (the former Grace Kelly), singers Marian Anderson and Eddie Fisher, and fashion designers James Galanos and Gustave Tassell.
