Perhaps the purest and most consistent of all the Surrealist painters from the mid-1920s onward, Yves Tanguy especially embraced the tenet of automatism, or suspension of the control exerted by reason in order to allow a free flow of images from the subconscious or unconscious. During 1949 Tanguy produced a number of ink drawings similar to this one in which shapes that are quasi-anatomical, quasi-mechanical metamorphose one into another in a way that suggests spontaneous or free association.
