Woman's "Palazzo Pajamas"

Image 1 of 21 / 2

A color contrast between the beaded and unbeaded fabric enhances the drama of this ensemble. The skirt’s front panels and back drapes are made of vivid red silk printed with a large dynamic pattern and small fish-scales, while fish-scale beading covers the jumpsuit beneath, adding orange tones as well as texture. Princess Irene Galitzine, a descendant of Russian nobility, was famous in the early 1960s for her "palazzo pajamas," a luxurious Italian take on at-home wear so glamorous that they were daringly worn even for gala occasions.
