Tagore’s masklike, enigmatic faces bring to mind portraits by Bauhaus artists like Paul Klee and Lyonel Feininger. When Tagore’s paintings were exhibited in Paris in 1930, local artists and critics readily appreciated his stark studies of the human visage. Yet these works were often met with puzzlement in India, where such bold experiments with abstraction were still rarely seen.
