Long Shawl

Although this shawl retains elements of the vegetal style, its design is dominated by dramatic architectural forms and Indian-inspired ornament. With its nine pattern weft colors it is classified as a châle riche, a quality of shawl woven with eight or more pattern weft colors. It was probably made in Paris or Lyons, which were known for producing the highest quality shawls during the nineteenth century. Additional color variations have been achieved in some areas by using two pattern weft colors together to create one, an innovation dating to 1849.
