Plate with design of Cranes
Artist/maker unknownCranes are symbols of longevity in Japan and, according to folklore, served as companions and messengers of the Taoist Immortals (sennin). They are also attributed with magical powers, such as the ability to make themselves immortal. The fact that female cranes are protective of their chicks has also led to cranes being a positive symbol of motherhood and marriage.
