Kent made Blue Bird, his first large wood engraving, in 1919 after his sojourn in Alaska, where he first began to make prints. In the same year, Carl Zigrosser, Kent’s longtime friend and the founding curator of the Museum’s department of prints and drawings, included the image in the limited-edition portfolio Twelve Prints by Contemporary American Artists, giving an immediate boost to the artist’s profile as a printmaker.
