Rockwell Kent

American, 1882 - 1971

Kent frequently returned to earlier motifs, refining his designs and adapting them to new drawings, prints, or paintings. For this wood engraving, the printmaker reimagined a pen-and-ink drawing that he made in Newfoundland during the previous decade. In the print, Kent has removed the distant islands and town, further isolating his heroic figure against the immensity of the night sky.
