Mountains in Autumn

Noguchi Shōhin

Japanese, 1847 - 1917

Image 1 of 61 / 6

A female artist trained in the style of the Chinese literati (scholar-officials), Noguchi Shōhin here depicts a landscape made more interesting by the unusual rock formation dominating its center. The poem reads:

A waterfall flows in amongst the trees and gushes fourth again,
The cliffs and rocks have a lingering purity.
With maple leaves as vivid as brocade,
The autumn mountains return to their bright luster.
