Kuwayama Gyokushū

Japanese, 1746 - 1799

Born into a wealthy family in Wakayama Prefecture, Japan, Kuwayama Gyokushü traveled to Kyoto to pursue his study of painting, where he came under the influence of Ike Taiga (1723-1776). During this period, artists were often invited by wealthy patrons to stay at their estates, in exchange for paintings or calligraphies, as indicated by the inscription.
