Martin started using a grid pattern in her paintings in 1959–60 and it soon became a constant in her work. The grid provided the artist with what she called an “ego-less” structure to express her vision of ideal beauty. In The Rose, the seemingly simple design becomes more complex upon careful examination. Delicate lines in rose-colored pencil, visible only from a close distance, echo the graphite lines, and cause the surface to appear to be bathed in a pink glow when viewed from afar.
