Jim Dine’s fascination with the hair-like quality of finely etched lines led him to explore forms like the bristles of paintbrushes and the intertwining strands of this disembodied braid. Although the print was conceived as a means to celebrate etching, Dine’s decision to isolate and label the object suggests that Braid can also be read as a deadpan reference to mundane culture within the context of the Pop Art movement with which Dine is typically associated.
