Between 1737 and 1740 Jean-François de Troy painted seven designs based on the Old Testament story of Esther for the royal tapestry manufactory in Gobelins. The biblical narrative reaches its climax in the scene shown here. Queen Esther-having revealed that she is Jewish to her husband Ahasuerus, king of the Persians-prevents the massacre of her people by Haman, the king's chief minister. De Troy's Story of Esther became the most frequently woven tapestry series in eighteenth-century France. Some four decades later they remained popular enough for Jacques-Firmin Beauvarlet to engrave them as a series.
