Like his brother the famous painter Ogata Korin, Ogata Kenzan turned to artistic production (pottery, calligraphy, and painting) as a means of financial support. Kenzan specialized in ceramics that drew inspiration from the kinds of decorative motifs perfected by earlier artists Hon'ami Koetsu and Tawaraya Sotatsu, and he is generally regarded as one of Japan's three greatest ceramicists.
