Drug Jar with Bryony Flowers and Parsley Leaf Patterns
Artist/maker unknownCylindrical jars like this one were most often used as drug receptacles but at times also served as flower vases. The technique that produced the golden metallic luster seen on this piece was a secret of Spanish potters until around 1500, and the floral “bryony pattern” was one of the most popular Valencian designs. Bryony is a flowering vine native to Europe, North Africa, and western Asia.
