Tuscany Protected from the Fury of War by Good Counsel and Wealth: Design for a Silver Plate by Ludovico Barchi

The little-known Filippo Luzi produced this design for a silver plate executed in homage to Cosimo de' Medici, grand duke of Tuscany from 1670 to 1723, as part of a series of silver salvers presented to successive grand dukes of Tuscany from 1680 to 1737 on the feast day of Saint John the Baptist. These were melted down at the turn of the eighteenth century during the French occupation, but they are known today through plaster casts.
