One of Rembrandt's most successful students, Bol emulated his master's style as it appeared in the 1630s and 40s. Here, he imitates Rembrandt's distinctively loose, scribbly etching style and dramatic chiaroscuro and directly borrows the motif of the praying man from his teacher's print.
