From the time he was a small child, Donald Evans invented imaginary countries and cultures that he recorded in fictive yet painstakingly catalogued and arranged watercolor stamps. He made up history, geography, royalty, politics, currency, and customs for the "countries" that issued his stamps, giving them names like "Frandia," "Achterdijk," or "Banana." He worked for a time as a designer in an architectural firm, but spent most of his adult life wandering around various American and European cities creating his stamps, into which he put aspects of his own life and the things that most interested him. In September 1976 he visited Henry McIlhenny at his castle, Glenveagh, in Ireland and made this series of stamps based on fruits and vegetables from the castle's famous gardens.
