Raymond Duchamp-Villon (Pierre-Maurice-Raymond Duchamp)French, 1876 - 1918
In 1914 Raymond Duchamp-Villon was commissioned to design the architecture for a dormitory on the campus of Connecticut College in New London. He was encouraged to draw upon the French tradition of Gothic architecture in developing his plans, and this plaster model's geometric ornamentation shows that the artist's designs were in keeping with the Gothic style in widespread use in American educational institutions in the early twentieth century. Sadly, Duchamp-Villon did not live to see the completed building, which is today known as Plant House and continues to offer living quarters for students.
