Man's Shoes

By the early 1970s, menswear had a decidedly flamboyant look, as these anything-but-humdrum shoes show. Red suede is dramatically inset on the rounded toes and forms bands on the stacked heels, whose height reflect the trend in feminine footwear for clunky-heeled platforms. Darrel Sewell, who in 1973 became the Museum's first curator of American art, wore this funky footwear beneath fashionable wide-legged trousers.
