In 1948 Picasso moved to Vallauris, an ancient Roman pottery town in the south of France that was still famous for its ceramic production. To experiment with earthenware, Picasso set up a studio in an old perfume factory where he made more than three thousand hand-painted pottery vessels, dishes, and tiles. In the early 1950s, he began creating linocut posters to promote the village’s ceramic exhibitions as well as its bullfights, which he attended religiously every Sunday.
