c. 1622

Large Grotesque Head (Man with Warts)

José Jusepe de Ribera, also called Lo Spagnoletto

Spanish (active Naples), 1591 - 1652

Ribera, a Spaniard, spent much of his career in Naples. The naturalism favored by many Neapolitan artists is pushed to an extreme in this print, an image so starkly realistic that the man's condition (Von Recklinhausen Disease) has been diagnosed by modern authorities.
