The Coronation of Sugriva and Installation of Prince Angada as Heir Apparent
Artist/maker unknownThanks to Rama, Sugriva is being reinstated as king of the monkeys. To adhere to the strict rules of his exile, however, Rama must refuse Sugriva's invitation to attend the coronation. He and Lakshmana, dressed in their leaf garments, return to the forest. Meanwhile, in the mountain palace, Sugriva is enthroned before a throng of councilors and guests, including Jambavat, king of the bears. The ritual accoutrements of coronation lie before him, and his nephew and heir, Angada, is installed on a smaller throne to his right. Below, tardy guests show their tails and red rumps as they creep into the cavelike entrance.
