The Storm

Jean Joseph Balechou

French, 1716 - 1764

Engravings of Claude-Joseph Vernet’s compositions circulated around the world, teaching the concept of the shipwreck painting and illustrating the usual elements, including scenes of drowning and rescue. Over time, hundreds of prints after Vernet’s paintings were published by many artists, beginning with the artist’s friends, such as Jean-Joseph Balechou, who engraved this plate at Vernet’s request.
