Dying Poplars and Tree

Stieglitz was an avid correspondent and often wrote daily to his closest associates. This little photograph was sent with a letter to Dorothy Norman on a summer day when Stieglitz was at his Lake George home. The inscription on the reverse of this piece ("This is a proof I just made from a negative full of spots in the sky. First proof. negative made 1933 the day after you told me what you had done. Lake George July 4, 36") seems to refer to an earlier and more intimate point in their relationship. Stieglitz was seventy-two years old in 1936 and was only to continue photographing for another year.
