Fan

Artist/maker unknown

Eighteenth-century deportment prescribed how fans were held while curtseying, standing, sitting, and walking. This fan features a mythological scene of Venus and her son Aeneas on the leaf, inlaid straw chinoiserie figures and buildings on the sticks, and serpentine swirls around a tiny figure on the pierced guards.
