Alexander Calder

American, 1898 - 1976

Alexander Calder was part of the third generation of a distinguished artistic Philadelphia family. Both his father and grandfather were important sculptors whose prominent public artworks can be seen throughout the city, including the sculpture campaign on City Hall and the Washington Monument Fountain in front of the Philadelphia Museum of Art. Although Calder pursued his artistic career elsewhere, Philadelphia has always claimed him as a member of the city's artistic progeny.
