John E. Dowell, Jr.

American, born 1941

The religious themes and symbols, and the hearts, fire, water, and lace that appear in Dowell's work are, according to the artist, inspired by the mysticism and timeless forces of the spirit world. In making this striking mixed-media piece, Dowell combined new technology with traditional printmaking techniques and materials.

Dowell is a graduate of the Tyler School of Art, Philadelphia. He earned his M.F.A. at the University of Washington in Seattle. The artist traveled to Brazil in 1988 and studied African-based religions, transforming his art in the process. Speaking of the images that he now depicts, Dowell has said "These forces are about life and these hearts are about life; that's what I want to get at."
