Pears, Peaches and Grapes, &c.

James Peale

American, 1749 - 1831

This lavish display of fruit, placed in and over Chinese-export porcelain tableware, illustrates James Peale’s characteristic ability to create graceful, intricate, and decorative compositions through a naturalistic presentation of the richness of American nature. James first exhibited still life subjects in 1795 but did not dedicate himself to this genre until the early 1820s. He and his nephew, Raphaelle, are celebrated as founders of the American still life tradition, and this table-top composition and its subdued background are typical of the work of both artists.

James’s awareness of European still life painting is revealed in his attention to detail and dramatic use of shadows, as well as his presentation of fruit at various stages of ripeness.
