About
Nearly four hundred textiles from around the world are reproduced in full color in this handbook of the Philadelphia Museum of Art’s encyclopedic collections, which cover a broad range of geographic areas, periods, and techniques. Europe and the Americas are represented by woven textiles, printed textiles, embroidery, lace, samplers, and quilts and coverlets, while other sections illustrate the textile arts of the Mediterranean and Middle East, as well as India, Southeast Asia, China, and Japan. Examples of twentieth-century international design complete this in-depth survey of the some ten thousand textiles in the museum. Each chapter is introduced by a brief history of that particular aspect of the museum’s collections, placing it within the context of textile scholarship and collecting in the United States and Europe.
